What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial arts system introduced to the United States by the infamous Gracie family back in the mid 1990′s. This is the same martial art responsible for igniting the Mixed Martial Arts craze in th United States through the Ultimate Fighting Championships. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a dynamic martial art system based on throws, joint locks, and chokes with many wonderful benefits including weight loss! The Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts is the only school in Wake Forest that provides certified Black Belt instruction of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

On any given day when students come to class new techniques are taught and a mental challenge is provided. When students train by “rolling” with each other they are physically challenged in a full body workout. These two elements helps to provide a fun atmosphere of training with a constantly changing challenge and demands. In terms of rewards students can see almost immediate benefits of training, such as with weight loss. Additionally, students will recieve rank promotions as they progress in their training. These rank promotions signifies progression and improvement and provides a positive reward system. The effective of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a weight loss system is more than evident when you see it for the first time. It is a great full body weight lose kicking machine. We do many solo exercise drills that help with movement on our feet and the ground. We also do a ton of partnered drills that provide a full body kicking workout. And when students roll they are getting the best of both worlds, cardio and resistance training.We have many students that have had significant weight loss after going through our program.
