BJJ should be your New Year’s Resolution!

Happy New Year! Have you made your list of New Year’s Resolutions? There isn’t a better time than right now to think about what you would like to accomplish in 2015. One of the most common New Year’s Resolutions is to lose weight or get fit. As most people know, diet and exercise are the best way to achieve this goal. Chances are, though, that this was your resolution last year too, right? I’ll bet that you didn’t stick with whatever exercise program you chose because within the first few weeks or months it became monotonous and failed to stimulate you beyond making your heart beat faster than usual.
You know what insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

If you’ve tried a dozen different exercise programs and stuck with none of them, what are the chances that number 13 will be the one? Don’t start a new exercise program! Start a new lifestyle!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lifestyle. It is not an exercise program; it is a martial art. It is not a fitness class; it is a life improving activity.

Lose weight or get fit: BJJ is a full body activity. Classes usually last for about an hour and include a warm-up, stretching, drilling, and sparring. Every class is different and will keep your body and your mind on their toes. The variety as well as the community of training with others will also help keep you coming back for more every class.
Think clearer or achieve mental balance: Check out this article on the Psychology of BJJ. It goes into detail on how BJJ can fulfill often overlooked psychological needs, be an outlet for aggression, and an activity that can help you forget or reduce your stresses.
Make more friends: The BJJ community is often more like a family than a group of people who exercise together. You will likely find yourself invited to UFC, birthday, and holiday parties of your fellow students and even your coach. You will probably start staying after class longer and longer to chat and hang out with the other students and their families.
